The surface coating of the cistern of potable water is as important as a good filter system or the protection of the potable water cistern from contaminations. Often the potable water cisterns get painted with normal paint. Never ever use normal paints or lacquers for a potable water cistern!
The most chosen surface coating is composed of a 2 component gluten that gets mixed just before its use. Like that, crack and damages in the wall of the cistern can get repaired straight after a good cleaning of the cistern. Also if the surface coating is made of plastic film or fibre glass, cracks in the wall have to be repaired.

The most frequently reason of leaks in the potable water cistern is the intrusion of roots. Once the cistern became leaking and looses water, the roots find this place und enter the cistern. This definitely has to be avoided as well if the cistern is coated by a plastic film. Otherwise, the roots keep on moving between film and wall until they find a gap to reach some water.
